History and Context of the Postgraduate Program
The postgraduate program on Bioscience and Physiopathology (PBF) is linked to the Clinical Biochemistry and Biomedicine Department of the State University of Maringa/UEM, located in the northwest region of Parana state, in the south of the country. It offers Master and PhD courses, which are recommended and recognized by the “Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior” (Capes), Education ministry (MEC). The program started its activities with the score 3, attributed by CAPES. At the triennium between 2007 and 2009 it obtained its actual score, which is 4.
The PBF have changed same times of nomenclature until arrive to the actual name since November 2013, approved by the University Council/COU of UEM at November 30 of 2014 trough resolution n. 032/2013-COU and by the Interdepartmental Council/CI of the Health Science Centre/CCS (n.025/2013-CI/CCS). The actual nomination “Postgraduate program on Bioscience and Physiopathology” (PBF), consistently accommodates the current program of research and education, considering the diversity of research lines, projects and by consequence dissertation, thesis and intellectual production. It also contemplates interdisciplinarity of the Pharmacy area/CAPES. The previous denominations were: Clinical Biochemisty postgraduate program (2003/03-2008/11) and Bioscience applied to Pharmacy (2008/12-2013/11).
STRUCTURE: The postgraduate program in Bioscience and Physiopathology has 1 (one) area of concentration and 3 (three) research lines, to known:
CONCENTRATION AREA: Bioscience and Physiopathology applied to Pharmacy
Description: Study of pathogens of medical interest, from etio-physio-pathology of humans and animals diseases and from eco-epidemiology and diseases control.
1. Pathogens of medical interest
Description: Study of pathogenicity mechanisms, attributes of virulence under the cells, physiology and molecular optic of medical microorganism of medical interest.
Study of the resistance/susceptibility profile of classical antimicrobials and new therapeutic approaches. Development of techniques, methods and protocols aiming the identification of these agents.
2. Etio-physio-pathology of the human and animals diseases
Description: Study of the basic aspects of different diseases that affect human and animals with emphasis in the study of physio-pathological process of them, predisposes factors, life habits and other, aiming to contribute to the improvement of laboratorial diagnosis, better comprehension of health/disease process and the promotion/maintaining of health.
3. Eco-epidemiology and disease control
Description: Study of environmental and/or ecologic factors that may to determine or to contribute to the human-environment unbalance; implicating the risk for diseases and other complications for humans, as well as mechanisms for their control.
These research lines, together, include the occupation area of the implicated professors, proven by the distribution of the 18 research projects, been six in each of the 3 research lines, which are coherent between them. Furthermore, the research lines have consistence and are related with the curricular proposal. The 18 research projects are driven by permanent professors from the post-graduate program, with external financial support. The distribution of the professors is balanced and implicates postgraduate and scientific initiation graduate students.
One hundred and seventy master dissertations were defended until the year 2013. The trained professionals actuate today in teaching e/or research activities, contributing to the economic and social development in the Parana state and other.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PBF
GENERAL GOALS: The postgraduate program on Bioscience and Physiopathology (PBF) is linked to the Clinical Biochemistry and Biomedicine Department (DAB)/UEM, and is destined to the training of qualified professionals to the University education, research activities and professional performing.
I- To prepare Master, PhD and researchers professionals, with advanced skills on bioscience and physiopathology, which are prepared for practicing scientific investigation;
II- To prepare Master, PhD and researchers to meet the needs from the health teaching schools;
III- To promote the discussion and comprehension about human diseases, that helps the student to have critical thinking and to improve or to be adaptable to the health care tendencies.
The postgraduate program is structured in lines of skills:
2) Research supervision
The research supervision allows the supervisor to propitiate a personal follow up of the student, leading to a solid preparation of professors/researchers. Moreover, the priority of the PBF is to prepare creative human, with technical and ethics skills, which are also able to work with and within groups. The pedagogic conception of the course allows developing theory and practical activities that lead to these skills.
